What you can do yourself
- Toothache. There are many causes: decay under a filling, an inflamed nerve, pressure from grinding, a leaking crown. A painkiller from the pharmacy bridges the time until the appointment; avoid heat, cooling helps. If the pain is very severe or the cheek is swollen, do not wait until tomorrow: root canal treatment and surgery usually offer same-day pain appointments with us.
- Inflamed gums. A chlorhexidine mouthwash from the pharmacy helps, but not for a prolonged period, because it can stain the teeth and temporarily affect the sense of taste. For mild inflammation, sage or chamomile tea will also do. If it happens more often, we clarify the cause: Periodontology.
- Wisdom tooth erupting and inflamed. Rinse as above and book an appointment: we check whether the tooth has room or should come out.
- Sensitive tooth necks. Toothpastes for sensitive teeth help; relief can come from sealing the tooth necks in the practice.
- Crown, inlay or bridge loosened. Fix it temporarily with toothpaste or denture adhesive and call on the next working day. Re-cementing a crown: 118 €.
- Tooth knocked out. Do not touch it by the root, do not wash it. Keep it moist: tooth rescue box or sterile saline solution from the pharmacy, or cold UHT milk if nothing else is available. Come to us or to the emergency service immediately. In the practice we clean and splint the tooth; it often reattaches. If there are other injuries, the medical emergency service or 112 comes first.
- A piece of an incisor has broken off. Place the fragment in saline solution or cold UHT milk and bring it with you. If it can no longer be reattached, we rebuild the tooth with tooth-coloured composite.
- Bleeding after tooth extraction. Slight bleeding is normal. Sit upright, cool the cheek, bite on a clean cloth handkerchief. If it does not stop, call us. In detail: Aftercare: the first 14 days.
Children
Most dental accidents happen during sport and on the playground. For children, the same applies to a knocked-out tooth as for adults, with one difference: knocked-out milk teeth are not reinserted, but a visit to the dentist is still necessary to check for injuries. Anyone who does mountain biking, football or karate is well advised to have an individually fitted sports mouthguard from our laboratory. More on treating children: Paediatric dentistry.
Our tip: a tooth rescue box for the medicine cabinet. It keeps a knocked-out tooth viable for up to 24 hours and costs little at the pharmacy. It is worthwhile for families with children and for sports clubs.
When you should not wait
Swelling reaching the eye or the neck, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulties, a fever above 39 °C, bleeding that does not stop after 30 minutes of pressure: these are emergencies for 112 or the nearest emergency department, not for the next working day.
After the emergency
An emergency service treats the acute pain. We clarify the cause afterwards at leisure, with findings, a plan and a cost overview: book an appointment online or call during opening hours on 03443 339 65 54. Address and directions: Contact.
