The overall pattern of symptoms is referred to as a functional disorder or craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). Possible causes include untreated gaps, misaligned teeth, teeth grinding and more.
Possible symptoms of TMD at a glance:
- Jaw joint pain, jaw clicking
- Limited Mouth Opening
- Tension in the Jaw Muscles
- Facial and Head Pain
- Dizziness and migraines, visual disturbances, ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Neck, shoulder and back problems, postural damage
Diagnostics and Treatment Options
To find the trigger for the problem, a precise examination is needed, during which we look out for things such as asymmetries when opening the mouth, muscle tension, or clicking in the jaw joint.
Targeted treatment is then carried out through splint therapy (with grinding guards, bite splints or positioning splints) to relax the muscles or correct the 'bite position'. Alternatively, adjusting fillings or dental prosthetics that don't quite 'fit' may be necessary.
